Large Witch Dolls

William Shakepeare's quote from "Macbeth" often springs to mind at the mention of the word "witch", but literature and folklore are filled with many other witch characters. These run the gamut from the evil to the comical. The witches on these pages, hopefully, fall somewhere in between. They are intended to represent a type of witch that mighy make up the citizenry of an imagined land, Ringebukingdom, where they are known as good, albeit somewhat peculiar, neighbors. They live mainly in tidy little cottages, where they keep very busy. They may pull a few little tricks and cut a few corners from time to time, but they are never evil.
The Large Witch Dolls are made in different styles and average up to about 30 inches in height; the doll shown on the left is one of our favorite styles and is a felt over clay design. We occassionally make needlesculpted felt large witches as well.

Each year we make a limited number of witch dolls in specific outfits and with unique names and stories.
Because we use no molds, and the faces of the witch dolls differ so much from doll to doll, the photos of the available dolls below show the exact doll for sale.
All witch dolls are signed, dated and when more than one doll with same outfit was made, numbered, by the witch maker.

Elmira the Autumn Witch

As the days grow shorter and the hills turn from green to gold, Elmira springs into action. Rarely seen during the hot summer months, she is now a familiar sight as she gathers the ripe, colorful berries of fall. These are an essential ingredient of her many potions, which she will be busily making all winter.

"Elmira" stands 23 inches tall from the heels of her boots to the tip of her hat. Her body is black suedecloth filled with glass pellets and she is jointed at the knees. She is shown with a stand here, but she can be removed to sit on a shelf as well - she does not stand on her own. Her face is wool felt over a clay "bone structure", and she has wired felt hands. Elmira's eyes are blue/green handpainted German glass and she has multicolored mohair yarn hair, with subtle shades of green. Her mouth and eyebrows are embroidered.

"Elmira" is dressed in the colors of autumn. She wears an orange, woven cotton skirt and a reddish woven cotton blouse with drop sleeves - black cotton undersleaves keep her warm on the chilly fall nights. Her boots are black ultrasuede, laced up from the toe to the ankle and she has a felt hat with a brown ultrasuede hatband. Elmira has a brown sueded rayon cape and handstitched patches. Around her neck she wears a frog pendant.
A limited edition of 5 Elmiras will be made in 2007. Because we use no molds, each face turns out very different and therefore the doll shown here is the exact doll that is for sale.

Celeste the Flying Witch

It’s a clear moonlit night, the stars are out and a warm breeze is beckoning. All too irresistible for Celeste, who pulls on her cape and climbs onto her fastest broom. Her serene countenance belies the heart of an aviator. She thinks nothing of flying from her home in the kingdom to distant lands, and back, in a single night.
