About Our Company

The Company ...
We are two sisters and we started our small doll company in 1992 under the name of North Wind Designs. The first doll we made for sale was the "Nisse" - a tiny elf-like creature popular in Nordic folklore. New doll designs followed - witch dolls, troll dolls and more - and prompted our current name, The Folklore Doll Company.

The Inspiration ...
The inspirations for our dolls are two very old ones that have inspired countless others as well - nature and folklore. A simple walk in the woods can invoke a dozen timeless images and feelings which in turn inspire a doll. A mossy stump suggests the cozy home of a tiny elf. A huge twisted and gnarled tree root could be an ancient troll, frozen in dawns early light. And an overgrown deer trail, twisting out of view into the forest, might actually lead to a clearing with a quaint witch's cottage under a full moon. With our folklore dolls, we attempt   to capture just some of the magic and imagery of nature, and bring them into the home.

The Dolls ...
Each doll that leaves our workshop is a signed original design, handmade using only top-quality materials. Faces and hands are made of wool felt or velveteen. Hair is made of handwashed raw fleece, German mohair or wool yarn; we use no animal pelts. Various materials are used to form the bodies, such as glass pellets, wire, wood and wood excelsior, and all the eyes are hand-blown glass. For the outfits we use primarily wool, wool felt, woven cotton, ultrasuede, suedecloth, velvet and velveteen. We make 100% of the doll - right down to the tassels!
