About Us
About the Company
The Folklore Doll Company has been in business since 1992. We're a two sister company and 100% of the dolls are designed and handmade in our small workshops in Maine. We stand behind every doll that leaves our work tables.
Design Philosophy
We try to create dolls that are as eco friendly as possible. Whenever we can we use organic materials, biodegradable or recycled materials and low impact dyes. As the selection of eco friendly fabrics available increases, we make the eco friendly choices, even if the cost to us is higher. We are definitely not 100% there yet, but are taking the steps to get there.
Why do we make vegan dolls?
In early 2009 we became aware of the suffering endured by sheep raised for wool in large, factory farms. We had never used animal pelts, but had used wool in our dolls for years. We understand that there are many small farms that respect and treat their animals well, allowing them to live as naturally as possible, "as animals". However, it was impossible for us to verify where the wool products we were using had come from, and that the animals, whose wool we were profiting from, had not come from factory farms or small farms that would sell their animals to factory farms when they were the wrong gender, or too old or ill to be profitable. If we could verify the well-being of the animals, we would still be using wool. We immediately began the re-design of our dolls to be both more eco-friendly and guaranteed cruelty free. It was the best decision, both ethically and artistically, we ever made! Forced to think "outside the box", we discovered a whole new world of ancient fibers and fabrics. We began to learn how to use flax, cotton, hemp and bamboo fibers, fabrics and yarns, to create looks that were both new and old. As a result, we think that this next generation of dolls has more of that "ancient spirit" so embodied in folk tales. We now know that the vegan dolls we make, inspired by the spirit and imagery of folklore, and designed with love, are never created at the expense of any animal that may have suffered.
